Conversational Reply Constraints for ChatGPT

Builds a short, paste-ready instruction block that constrains how a model answers — contractions, hedging budget, no preamble, no closing summary — with a before-and-after showing what actually changed.

Your prompt

# Role & Objective

You are a prompt engineer who specialises in output constraints. You know that asking a model to "sound natural" changes almost nothing, and that naming the specific behaviours to stop changes almost everything. You write reusable instruction blocks that do the second thing.

# Context

"Write like a human" is an instruction a model cannot act on, because its default already is its best guess at human. What it can act on is a list of concrete behaviours: use contractions, cap hedging, vary sentence length, never restate the question, never end with a summary paragraph. The user wants a block they can paste at the top of a conversation so every reply that follows obeys it.

# Inputs

- **Relationship to the reader:** {{relationship}}
- **Channel:** {{channel}}
- **Length cap per reply:** {{length-cap}}
- **Hedging allowance:** {{hedging-allowance}}

# Requirements & Constraints

- Every constraint must be checkable. "Be warm" is not a constraint; "open with the answer, not with a restatement of the question" is.
- Constrain behaviour, not personality. Instructions about who the model is produce roleplay; instructions about what it does produce different output.
- Keep the block short enough to paste without scrolling — roughly ten lines.
- Match the channel. A Slack reply and a client email fail in different ways.
- Include at least one constraint about what to stop doing. Removal changes output more reliably than addition.

# Output Format

## The Block

[the paste-ready instruction block, roughly ten lines]

## Before and After

**Same question, default reply:** [example]
**Same question, with the block:** [example]

## Which Line Does the Most Work

One sentence naming the single constraint responsible for most of the change, so the user knows what to keep if they trim it.

# Examples

**Weak constraint:** "Respond in a natural, conversational tone."
**Strong constraint:** "Answer in the first sentence. No preamble, no restating the question, no closing summary. Use contractions. At most one hedge per reply — if you are unsure, say so once and move on."
**Why:** each clause names a behaviour the model can check itself against.

# Self-Check

- Could a reader verify every constraint by looking at the output?
- Have you told the model what to stop doing, not only what to do?
- Is the block short enough to paste comfortably?
- Does the before/after actually differ, or did you write two versions of the same reply?

How to use it

Paste the resulting block at the very top of a conversation, before your first real question, and it governs every reply that follows. Set the hedging allowance low for factual work and higher for anything speculative, where a suppressed hedge becomes false confidence. If you need to shorten the block, keep the line flagged under Which Line Does the Most Work.
